Description

I never do art impulsively. I plan, fuss, erase, zoom, fixate. But while I was working on some sketches, Cosmic Love by Florence + the Machine came up on my Pandora station. Now, I have been meaning to do a piece inspired by the Cosmic Love music video for some time. But it was kind of a backburner project -- not something I was planning to do particularly soon. It was something I wanted to prepare for, put lots of time into, and do right.

However, the song happened to come on and I became instantly possessed, immediately putting aside what I had been drawing before. This picture came flooding out of me in an hour. Not so unusual for a lot of people, I'm sure, but I never ever work this way.

Florence's music taps directly into the deepest part of me, bypassing all thought and piercing straight into my raw essence.

N-ever say the Nevereverword.  First, Truest, Best.  We say we cannot, we will not. We absolutely refuse.  We flee to the very ends of the earth, in a hope to escape… only to realize at last, that go where we may, we but carry with us every minute the secret sense that our light is burning lower, and lower, and lower. Until, at last, desperate, lest our light go out altogether, and in an utter agony of dedication, we gather all our comforts and all our riches into our hands and lay them in the flame. And so it goes on, year after year. If our flame is to be kept burning, we shall have had to feed into it everything we have. And it often seems that it cannot reach its most ineffable beauty or attain to its most strangely piercing power until it has fed on our very blood. But let us not profane the thing with any whining about “sacrifice.” No one ever yet gave up anything for the sake of the highest truth and beauty within,  without getting far more than they gave. Deep, deep down everyone of us is secretly hoping and seeking for that which is great enough, true enough, beautiful enough, to give to it, everything. Deep down it is not suffering we fear. We do not fear even death. What we really fear most is that we may go through life and never find that to which we may give our all. Really everyone of us longs to erect an altar in his heart, and on it to lay down his or her very own self. Except we die we shall not live. And oh, how we want to live!
