Undone: Sun Herons

These images are selections from my senior art exhibit "Undone," my capstone project for my art degree at Beloit College.

"Undone" was a sequential art installation that told a wordless story using the walls of a gallery as its canvas. There is no definite beginning or end, just a small world that viewers can explore however they wish.

Check out my blog for a photographic tour. The image quality is not as good as here, these being the unadulterated (other than being significantly resized) digital files, but the photographs will give you a better idea of how the exhibit looked and felt.


My artist's statement:

My piece is a reimagined form of sequential art that investigates themes of exploration, wonder, and the simultaneous magic and threat of the unknown. By discarding unnecessary print conventions, I have given the essential storytelling characteristics of sequential art free reign. The story is thus allowed to flow over the walls and to literally create its own shape.

The characters are likewise venturing into unfamiliar territory, irresistibly drawn by red strings that may be interpreted literally, as mysterious and fanciful pathways, or metaphorically, as any number of motivations or compulsions.

Rather than reaching logical or easily evaluated conclusions, the characters’ journeys culminate in a tangle that implies complication rather than resolution, questions rather than answers, and an uncertain connection between the two individuals. What appeared to be a linear, inevitable path is revealed to be complex and full of choices. Like all stories, it is only a segment of something much larger.

My foremost intent is simply to tell a compelling story, to charm and captivate. The environments and events are whimsical and otherworldly, and many particulars of the narrative are left ambiguous. It is designed to stimulate the imagination while leaving ample space for viewers to fill in the blanks themselves.
